eXpress++-DevCon im September in Boise, Idaho

Beitrag von Tom »

Ich zitiere eine Ankündigung aus dem eXpress++-WebBoard:

=======================================
Announcing the 2008 eXpress++ US Devcon
=======================================

The time has come to announce the gathering of the eXpress++ community in
Boise, Idaho, USA in mid-September of year 2008.

Over the past several years, eXpress++ users have encouraged me to host a
Conference that will be dedicated entirely to eXpress++ developers. Two
years ago, we had a small focus group gathering in Boise that was such a
big success that we all felt that this kind of forum should be offered to
a
much
larger group of eXpress++ developers.

This idea was also inspired by the fact that half of the attendees at the
Xbase++ Berlin Devcon in 2007 were eXpress++ users and that there was not
sufficient time dedicated to show the new features of eXpress++ or work
with
eXpress++ customers.

* Special Guest Speaker - Steffen Pirsig, CEO of Alaska Software.

We are still developing the agenda for the devcon. What you can expect
will
be very different from any other technical devcon you may have attended
in the past. This conference will focus entirely on showing you how to
improve
your applications and become a more productive programmer. There will be

no
third-party presentations, other than that given by Steffen Pirsig. This
gathering will give you an opportunity to get the answers to many
questions you probably have had in your head for a long time and also
show you many new things that will improve your end application.

Most of the presentations will be given by Roger Donnay and other
eXpress++ developers.

Since all attendees will be eXpress++ developers, you will have an
opportunity
to meet other users of eXpress++ and share ideas and code. We will have
presentations from developers who have created successful applications
and businesses using Xbase++ and eXpress++.

This devcon will be modeled after the very first Xbase++ devcon in
Manchester,
NH about 8 years ago. All presentations will be in one room and
attention will be given to topics that eXpress++ developers will vote on
based on their level of interest and their needs. The goal is to
disseminate as much
information
in
3 days as is humanly possible.

The weather in Boise, ID tends to be exceptionally nice in mid-September.
For those of you who have a motorcycle license and would like to
participate in a nice day trip or even overnight trip after the devcon,
we have the newest Harley Davidson dealer in the US West right here in
Boise and you can Rent-a-Harley by the day for a very reasonable price.
I invite anyone to join me for the 1st annual eXpress++ Nickel Beer Run.

We are just starting to put together a list of ideas for seminar
material. Here are a few suggestions:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Adding more value to your application with a minimum of development
effort
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-

All of the below features have been added to existing applications by
only inserting a few lines of code:

* Convert all of your application pushbuttons to classy XP-style buttons.

* Use the eXpress++ resizing system to improve dialog windows.

* Use eXpress++ scaling to improve the end-user visibility and to
accommodate a variety of client workstations from as small as Pocket PC

to
large monitors.

* Incorporate a Document Manager system into applications that allows any
kind of document to be attached to any record of any database.

* Incorporate a Print Manager system that gives a consistent user
interface to
print jobs and allows for a variety of output options such as preview
with
Acrobat, send to Excel, send by Email, etc.

* Give your users a SQL query capability without any changes to
databases.

* Add powerful graphing in minutes using RMCHART and DCACTIVEXCONTROL.

* Leverage Google Maps or Microsoft Maps online to provide driving
directions.

* Create a Web-Service that gives disparate systems, ie .NET
applications,
access to your data and or legacy procedures.

* Super-class eXpress++ dialog classes to change the default behavior of
a DC*
dialog object.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- Using eXpress++ debugging and error-handling features to improve
programmer productivity and technical support
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- * How to observe any series of expressions in a debug window. * How
to use the debug system to call your editor and jump directly to the
line of code that is in the debug stack. * How to write debugging
information to a file. * How to use DC_Dot() to help debug database
issues. * How to get more useful debug information from the error handler
system.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- Adding Web-based features to your application
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- * How to provide an automatic update system to keep customers
current. * How to create or use Web Services. * How to add an Instant
Messenger to your application. * How to use XML for Universal Data
Format. * How to create a back-up service for your customers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- Adding Active-X features to your application
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- * How to use the Internet Explorer Active-X control. * How to use
RMCHART graphing in Dash Boards.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- Improving Database access
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- * How to use record objects. * How to use Advantage SQL to improve
your legacy application.
Herzlich,
Tom
